What does glute augmentation with lipotransfer involve?
Glute augmentation with lipotransfer is a surgical procedure to increase the size and improve the shape of the buttocks using autologous fat. By placing the fat into the right layer, the buttocks are enhanced, improving both their shape and volume.
Who is it indicated for?
People who want to increase and improve the shape of the buttocks, as long as they understand the limitations:
- It cannot be performed on smokers
- Only one size can be increased per procedure
- The fat is autologous, meaning you must have enough fat to perform a liposuction during the same procedure and transfer it to the buttocks (min. 1500 cc of total extracted fat).
It is indicated for:
- Enhancing a small or poorly developed buttocks
- Correcting asymmetry
- Restoring volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss
- Helping to correct changes such as fibrosis and scars
Planning
During the first consultation, we will assess the size and shape of the buttocks, the firmness of the skin, and your overall health. We will also check whether you have enough available fat for this procedure. You will be explained the different surgical techniques, and the size and shape that your buttocks will have will be discussed.
You should share your expectations honestly and openly, so that Dr. Jaime de San Pío can show you the available alternatives for your specific situation, along with the risks and limitations of each option.
Surgery
It is performed under general anesthesia in the Hospital Mediterráneo on an outpatient basis, meaning you do not need hospital admission. The approximate stay in the recovery room is 3 hours.
A liposuction or lipo-sculpture of the areas previously determined is performed. The fat is collected in a sterile collection device and prepared to be transferred using very small cannulas to a spaghetti-like appearance. Micropore 3M tape is applied. Only one stitch is placed in the liposuction openings. You must wear a special compression garment that compresses the liposuction areas, but not the buttocks.
What is the recovery like?
You will not need dressings, as the incision is protected with tape until the stitches are removed. The recovery is similar to that of a lipo-sculpture.
After breast surgery it is normal to feel somewhat tired for a few days, but you will be able to carry on with almost normal life from day one, thanks to the local anesthesia we use during the procedure.
Compression garment over the liposuction areas during the day and night (min. 4 weeks). Stitches are removed at 7 days.
Swelling does not fully subside until 8 weeks. After glute augmentation with lipotransfer, you will be able to return to work in just a few days. You will be able to move and carry up to 2 kilograms of weight in the first week. Most discomfort can be well controlled with the prescribed medication, although the breasts may hurt for a couple of weeks.
What risks and complications are there?
Fat transfer to the buttocks is a safe technique, as long as it is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon. However, as with any operation, complications and associated risks can always occur.
- Bleeding / hematoma: uncommon and highly related to strain.
- Infection: very uncommon
- Fat necrosis: occurs if more fat is introduced than the area can tolerate. Oil cysts would form and be gradually reabsorbed.
- Sensory changes: very uncommon
Frequently asked questions
Does glute augmentation with lipotransfer hurt?
Glute augmentation with lipotransfer is very low pain. The areas that may present pain or discomfort are those of the liposuction. The most important thing is to follow Dr. Jaime de San Pío’s instructions correctly after the operation so that the recovery process is as least uncomfortable and painless as possible.
Is the aesthetic result immediate?
The result will take 2–3 months to be definitive, but by one month you will already see an approximate result.
Will the scars be visible? Where are they placed?
The scars left after liposuction are about 4 mm, and the scars from lipotransfer are practically imperceptible.
