Frequently asked questions
What do we use botulinum toxin for in aesthetic medicine?
Botulinum toxin permanently attaches to the neuromuscular receptor, blocking contraction of the muscle fibers. The effect wears off when we create new neuroreceptors.
- Softening expression wrinkles in: crow’s feet, between the eyebrows, forehead
- Lift the tail of the eyebrow
- Helps correct a gingival smile
- Treatment for bruxism or masseter muscle hypertrophy
- Correction of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in hands and armpits
- Reduce platysma bands
- Improve asymmetries caused by facial paralysis
Soften expression wrinkles
Botulinum toxin is the treatment of choice in the upper third of the face to soften expression wrinkles and help prevent the formation of new ones, without removing naturalness from the face.
The effects of toxin in the upper third of the face are to reduce forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and crow’s feet. It can also lift the tail of the eyebrow slightly.
Lift the tail of the eyebrow
The tail of the eyebrow can be lifted slightly by blocking the lateral portion of the orbicularis oculi muscle just below the outer side of the eyebrow. When the eyebrow is raised, it pulls up the upper eyelid, opening the gaze and, in many cases, disguising excess upper eyelid tissue.
Gingival smile
A gingival smile can be corrected with botulinum toxin and with hyaluronic acid to support the lip.
Correction of a gingival smile with botulinum toxin is done with two injections at the sides of the nasal wing, where we block the elevator of the upper lip, the elevator of the nose wing, and the zygomaticus minor.
Bruxism and masseter muscle hypertrophy
Bruxism and masseter muscle hypertrophy can be treated with botulinum toxin. In addition, by relaxing the musculature, it reduces it and, in some cases, helps alleviate pain related to the condyle of the jaw joint.
Improvement in the appearance of masseter hypertrophy begins to be noticeable after 3 months of treatment. However, pain and bruxism improve within a few days.
Correct hyperhidrosis with toxin
Excessive sweating can cause discomfort in our day-to-day life. Botulinum toxin can reduce this problem safely and effectively. Primarily, the armpits and hands are treated, but other areas can also be treated.
First, we would determine the area to be treated using the iodine test, and then we would make multiple injections with 1 cm spacing, under topical anesthesia cream. Treatment may last up to a year. An alternative for permanent armpit treatment is liposuction curettage.
How long does the effect of botulinum toxin last?
The duration of botulinum toxin type A is between 4 and 6 months. There are interindividual variations, and the duration also depends on the area where it is placed. We should keep in mind that the effects of the treatment are perceived between 3 and 5 days after injection, reaching their maximum effect at 10 days.
What’s the difference between Botox and filler?
Botox and filler are two completely different things, but they are complementary. Botox works by blocking nerve signals to the muscles, causing them to relax and thereby reducing the visibility of wrinkles. Filler is injected beneath the skin to add volume and hydration, reducing wrinkles.
How is botulinum toxin applied?
Botulinum toxin is not a filler. It comes in 50U vials in powder form, which is dissolved with 1.25 ml of saline. It is injected through very fine 30G needles that do not leave marks. The toxin blocks the neuromuscular receptor by paralyzing the muscle.
Do you lose expressiveness or facial mimicry with “Botox”?
Botulinum toxin blocks the receptors that transmit the signal for muscle contraction—meaning we achieve selective muscle relaxation. When the toxin is applied correctly, the result is natural and pleasant.
Is anesthesia needed? Does it hurt a lot?
Because it is a quick procedure, many patients do not need topical anesthesia. It is generally well tolerated. However, the injections cause slight discomfort.
